Ohio Casino Commission Sends Licence Approval For Hosting Online and Retail Sportsbooks

During yesterday's meeting, the Ohio Casino Control Commission (OCCC) took the first steps in approving sports betting licences. It is estimated that 22 entities are seeking partnerships with online gambling operators.

During yesterday's meeting, the Ohio Casino Control Commission (OCCC) took the first steps in approving sports betting licences. It is estimated that 22 entities are seeking partnerships with online gambling operators. Furthermore, they are one of the 26 owners who have applied to open brick-and-mortar sportsbooks. Some of them are:

  • JACK Cleveland Casino
  • JACK Thistledown Racino
  • Cleveland Browns
  • Columbus Crew
  • Cincinnati Reds
  • Muirfield Village Golf Club
  • Hollywood Casino Toledo
  • Hollywood Gaming at Mahoning Valley.

The OCCC required individuals interested in obtaining a sports betting licence to submit their application by July 15th and to be considered for the January 1st start date. Additionally, on Wednesday, the OCCC reminded applicants that information about key employees and holding companies must be submitted by October 5th, or they won't be able to participate. Numerous reminders have been sent directly to all stakeholders about the need to provide such information.

In addition, applicants are required to submit OCCC-approved responsible gaming plans, procedures, house rules, and geolocation procedures by November 2nd. The deadline is the same for traditional sports betting employee applications. In addition, failing to meet that deadline will block those applicants’ beginning of sports betting on January 1st.

On the other side, there are also 500 sports betting kiosk hosts on the Ohio Casino Control Commission’s approved list so far. The number of Ohio businesses applying to host sports betting kiosks exceeds 800. The entire list can be found by searching Ohio's licence ePortal and choosing the Casino Control Commission as a board name.

Businesses that submit applications before August 16th will have the ability to launch their kiosks on January 1st, 2023 - the official start date in Ohio. Applications submitted on August 16th or later are not guaranteed a position for the universal start date if a license is awarded.

Ohio bars and restaurants were the most common applicants for sports betting kiosks. Licenses for sports betting kiosks require the applicants to hold valid liquor permits. The other requirements in the list are:

  • Holding a valid liquor permit like D-1, D-2, or D-5
  • Holding a valid licence for employing a lottery sales agent
  • Have a specific Lottery recommendation for licensing
  • Participating as a profit corporation or association

Businesses that meet all the abovementioned requirements are eligible to host kiosks. So, make sure to complete them if you want to host sports betting in your facility.
