On the 19th of December this year, the hotel resort and casino MGM Springfield got a sports betting license from the Massachusetts regulator. This Springfield-based hotel and casino is managed and operated by MGM Resorts International, which means they have approval for legal in-person sports betting activities in the state. Thanks to this license, MGM Springfield became the second legal sports betting operator in the area since the official iGaming debut in Massachusetts.
MGM Springfield’s obstacles to obtaining a licence
MGM Springfield representatives encountered delays and tough questions from the regulator on their road to obtaining the license. As a result of missing an essential filing deadline last month, the situation was even worse for MGM Springfield. On top of that, the Massachusetts Gaming Commission postponed a crucial vote for the license two weeks ago. The regulatory body voted unanimously to approve the company’s application for a sports betting license, but their meeting on Monday was intense for MGM officials and lawyers.
Throughout the meeting, the Massachusetts regulator was focused only on the lawsuit problems the company is facing. Other points at that meeting were the disappointment that Springfield politicians made in public last week and the relationship between MGM Springfield and BetMGM. Also, a subsidiary of MGM Resorts International has been selected to supply sports betting services for in-person betting in the resort.

The proposed MGM Springfield casino will offer sports betting through automated kiosks and staff-operated counters. There would be a lounge already built with a screen to broadcast games, a bar, chairs, an enclosed wagering counter, and betting kiosks worth $4 million.
As a result of bringing sports betting to Springfield, MGM plans are focused on opening seven new full-time jobs and six new part-time jobs for the casino staff.
